The BRC is fortunate in its association with a number of fine designers and consultants. We are indeed collaborative, bringing new projects into our shared Studio space and inviting the participation of others as needed. This sharing of ideas across disciplines enriches each of us and our projects.
Lynn Barendsen
Research, writing and editing - The GoodWork® Project, Harvard University
Lynn is a Project Manager at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard. Since 1997, she has investigated a variety of research questions about the working world, most recently considering how understandings of quality have evolved as a result of changes in technology and communication. She has co-developed the “GoodWork Toolkit”, a pedagogical system that encourages school communities and other institutions and individuals to consider the broader ethical implications of their work and the meaning of work in their lives. While not at Harvard, Lynn performs research and communications guidance as well as funding and grant writing for The BRC and our clients as needed.
Lynn holds an undergraduate degree from Bates College, a Master’s degree from The University of Chicago, and spent several years engaged in doctoral studies at Boston University. She has published articles on African American and regionalist literatures, social and business entrepreneurs, and the elements of leadership. She has taught courses in literature and film, English and American literature, expository writing and led numerous seminars and workshops on GoodWork. Most recently, with Howard Gardner, she has co-authored a chapter for the Oxford Handbook on Positive Psychology.
John Rossi
Registered Architect
John is a LEED accredited design professional and registered architect with 15+ years of architectural, interior and industrial design experience. The son of a Connecticut builder and developer, John is from a long line of stone masons and grew up in and around residential construction and maintained his own construction business for a time. During college, John studied in Rome, travelled extensively in Italy and throughout Europe and worked in a sculptor’s studio assisting with works in marble, granite and cast bronze, developing a true appreciation for the roots of so much that we do today. John has also worked as a free-lance sculptor and filmmaker and has a number of product designs undergoing the initial Patenting process.
Since receiving his Master’s in Architecture in 1993, John has gained a variety of experiences in the architecture world: interning at a single-practitioner office, working for several years with one of the largest firms in Boston, and finally hanging out his own shingle in Newburyport, MA. His projects have included single family residential work, assisted living facilities up to 90,000 sf, museums, and schools.
John's passion for design has led him to commit fully to making design green, readily accessible, and current. Earlier designs with PowerHouse Enterprises, which he co-founded, exemplify these interests. Since leaving PowerHouse, John's projects have included a number of houses, a homeopathic medical facility in Cambridge MA, a number of residences for a commercial developer in Cambridge – including a multi unit condominium awaiting its LEED Silver Certification from the USGBC and a couple of residential renovation/rescues. John is also beginning to gain some ground in the restaurant and hospitality areas, which – as a real "foodie" is very exciting for him. The convergence of several trends, including the emerging "Farm to Table" ethos and the public's desire for fresh, local foods prepared and served in an inviting, healthy atmosphere is setting the stage for many great design opportunities.
Hillary Ward
Registered Architect
Hilary is an NCARB certified registered architect with ten years of experience in New England. Her design experience includes campus planning and building design, assisted living facilities, restaurants, and residences of all sizes and scales. Her education took her to rural villages in China (and working there, while studying architecture at the internationally known Kun Ming Polytechnic), busy streets in Rome, ketchup factories in Pittsburgh, and abandoned hospitals in Philadelphia.
Upon graduation from Carnegie Mellon University in 1998, Hilary moved to Boston, and then to Amesbury, MA. A full renovation of her 230 year old house won a Historic Preservation Award in 2002. Since venturing out on her own and developing an association with the BRC in 2007, her projects have focused on getting more from less – in terms of space, budget, energy and resources; always with a focus on clean, elegant design.
Ryan Guilbault
Landscape architecture - Ground Work Studio
Ryan Guilbault is a registered Landscape Architect living and working on Boston’s North Shore. After graduating from Virginia Tech in 1996 he returned home to work in such offices as Camp Dresser McKee, Hargreaves Associates, and Carr Lynch Sandell. At Carr Lynch Sandell, Ryan was the project manager for the new Prudential Center South Garden and project landscape architect for North Point Park, a new eight acre green space that is part of the redesigned Lower Charles River Basin in Boston. Because of his involvement in projects ranging from large scale urban design to campus master plans to small scale residential gardens, Ryan has always been able to simultaneously focus on intimate design details while maintaining an overall project vision. His desire to spend as much time as possible outdoors led him to form his own design and installation company, Ground Work Studio, LLC. Currently, Ryan is living in Amesbury, MA with his wife and four children and spends most of his days installing native plant material and most of his nights designing the gardens that house them.
